Not legal, financial, or tax advice

Haul Handbook provides general, educational information about how trucking registration, permits, and taxes work: operating authority, USDOT numbers, IFTA, IRP, UCR, and state requirements. Nothing on this site is legal advice, financial advice, or tax advice, and using this site does not create any professional or advisory relationship. We are not attorneys, accountants, or your fiduciary.

Not a filing service

This site does not file anything with FMCSA or any state agency, and it is not affiliated with any government body. Every registration described here can be completed directly with the agency that runs it, usually for the government fee alone. Companies that offer to file for you charge a service markup on top of that fee; whether that is worth paying is your call.

Verify with the agency before you act

We compile information from official government and program sources, and we show a source and a verification date for the legal and financial facts on our pages. Even so, agencies change fees, forms, thresholds, and deadlines, and errors are possible. Before you file, pay, or sign anything, confirm the current requirement directly with the issuing agency: FMCSA for federal authority, your base state for IFTA and IRP, and the state DOT or permit office for size and weight permits.

Regulations change

Trucking rules are a moving target. Fuel tax rates change quarterly, registration fees change with state budgets, and federal rules change through rulemaking. Our methodology page describes the re-verification cadence for each data set, including the quarterly refresh of the IFTA rate tables. A verification date tells you when we last checked a fact, not that it cannot have changed since.

No outcome is guaranteed

We do not guarantee that any information here is complete, current, or error-free, and we are not responsible for decisions made in reliance on it, including rejected filings, penalties, missed deadlines, or lost operating time. You are solely responsible for your own compliance and business decisions.
