IFTA license cost by state: license and decal fees
13 of 50 IFTA base jurisdictions publish a license fee, from $3 to $35, and 13 charge no license fee on the record this page renders. Decal charges are separate and per vehicle. Haul Handbook read each jurisdiction's own fee record, checked Oct 8, 2026.
An IFTA account carries at most two entry charges: a license fee for the account itself, and a decal charge for each qualified motor vehicle in the fleet. Both are set by the base jurisdiction, the state the carrier registers in, and both are small next to the quarterly fuel tax the account exists to settle. The IFTA filing walkthrough covers the return itself; this page is only the price of holding the license.
License and decal fees in every base jurisdiction
Each figure comes from that jurisdiction’s own IFTA record, checked Oct 8, 2026 at the latest. An empty cell means the record publishes no such fee, and the note under the state name says what the agency record does state. Fees can change at renewal, so read the amount beside its source marker before budgeting a new account.

Alabama (AL)Decal fees under the department's threshold of $750 may be paid electronically or by cashier's check, money order, certified bank check, credit or debit card, or cash in person. Payments of $750 or more must be made electronically. Replacement decals are free when the originals were lost in transit for at least two weeks. The Department of Revenue IRP & IFTA page and its IFTA rules state no IFTA license fee, so none is recorded rather than guessed. Rule 810-5-9-.09 says the fee, if any, for a set of Alabama IFTA decals is set under Code of Alabama Section 40-17-150. The department does not print the dollar amount on its IRP & IFTA page or in the rule, so no figure is recorded here.

Arizona (AZ)The published IFTA charges are the $10 original and $10 annual renewal filing fee. A bond of $3,250 may be required depending on the carrier's standing or when it has never held an IFTA license in any member jurisdiction. A $10 filing fee applies to the first IFTA license application and a $10 renewal filing fee applies every year (A.R.S. 28-5735(A)(2); ADOT Motor Carrier Services FAQ). The IFTA Manual calls it a processing fee and asks for certified funds such as a money order or cashier's check on paper applications. No separate decal charge is published. ADOT issues one license and a set of two decals for each qualified motor vehicle, valid for the calendar year, and the FAQ lists the $10 filing fee as the only IFTA fee, so no decal amount is recorded rather than a guessed zero.

Arkansas (AR)Arkansas charges nothing for the IFTA license or decals on Form AMFT-71. The published charges are on late returns: a $50 or 10 percent penalty and interest at the rate for the delinquent tax period. Form AMFT-71 prints NO FEE beside the number of vehicles requiring IFTA decals, and neither the application, its instructions, nor the Motor Fuel Tax page states any license charge. Form AMFT-71 marks the decal request line NO FEE; decals are requested on the original, renewal, or supplement application.
California (CA)The annual California IFTA license fee is 10 dollars. IFTA decals cost 2 dollars per set; one set is required for each qualified motor vehicle.

Colorado (CO)No license or decal fee. Late returns draw a penalty of $50 or 10 percent of the tax due, whichever is greater, plus interest. Colorado does not charge a fee for the IFTA license. Colorado does not charge for decals. They are mailed by regular mail; expedited FedEx delivery is charged to the carrier's own FedEx account.
Connecticut (CT)DRS publishes no separate IFTA license fee. The charge is the per-vehicle registration and decal fee set by C.G.S. 12-487(b)(1), paid when decal sets are ordered or renewed in myconneCT. C.G.S. 12-487(b)(1) requires a carrier based in Connecticut to register each qualified motor vehicle operated in interstate commerce with the Commissioner of Revenue Services for a fee of ten dollars per vehicle, renewable annually, and DRS supplies the identification markers (decals). The DRS FAQ says payment is submitted with each decal order or renewal in myconneCT. Licensees receive two decals per qualified vehicle.

Georgia (GA)Georgia publishes no separate IFTA license fee. The Department of Revenue's motor fuel rules page for interstate motor carriers states the annual IFTA license cost as $3.00 per vehicle, and the same department prices IFTA decals at $3 per set with one set required per vehicle. Because the two figures may describe the same per-vehicle charge, no separate license fee is asserted here; the verified per-vehicle charge is recorded as decal fee. IFTA decals are $3 per set and one set is required per vehicle. One decal goes on or near each side of the cab. Decal requests are processed the next business day and mailed to the address on file.

Idaho (ID)The published IFTA charges are $3.00 per decal set and $10 per 30-day temporary decal. A carrier that reapplies less than a year after canceling must file every return the old license would have required, with a $50 penalty for each of those periods. Idaho charges no separate license fee. The IFTA Handbook states that the cost for obtaining an IFTA license is $3.00 per decal set ordered, so the charge is recorded as the decal fee rather than as a license fee. $3.00 per decal set on the original application, on renewal, and for additional decals ordered during the year. A 30-day temporary decal, for a licensee who needs to put a vehicle in service before decals arrive, costs $10 per unit and is sold at the Tax Commission offices in Boise.

The IFTA page's new-carrier checklist prices 1 dollar per annual fee for each set of decals; the Truck Information Guide states decals are 50 cents for a set of two. Form MF-39 and the KDOR motor fuel FAQ both price the IFTA license at $10 for the first qualified motor vehicle and $1.00 for each additional qualified motor vehicle, paid with the application; the licensee then receives a master license and decals for each vehicle. Additional decals cost $1.00 per set, one set per vehicle, ordered online or on Form MF-23. Louisiana (LA)The whole entry cost of a Louisiana IFTA account for a single-truck carrier is $37.00: the $35.00 initial license fee plus $2.00 for the vehicle's pair of decals. Renewals cost $2.00 per vehicle. Louisiana does not generally require a bond of a first-time applicant; the Department may require one after late filing, unpaid tax, or an audit finding severe enough in its discretion to warrant protecting the other member jurisdictions. A one-time $35.00 initial license fee, paid with the paper Form R-5678-L application or electronically through LaTAP after the account number is issued. There is no cost for a renewal license. A previously closed account can be reactivated without paying the $35.00 again, but only if it has been closed for less than one year, the corporate structure has not changed, and the previous license was not revoked. A reinstatement after revocation is $35.00, and a carrier required to post a bond after a compliance problem must remit the $35.00 initial license fee again on top of the bond and any outstanding liabilities. $1.00 per decal, and two decals are required for each qualified motor vehicle, so the cost is $2.00 per vehicle per year. The Department states the same figure as $2.00 per set for additional sets ordered during the license year and for sets ordered on the annual renewal application. One decal goes on the lower rear exterior of the passenger side and one on the driver side of the power unit. Decals may not be transferred from one company to another, and when a lease ends the party responsible for reporting and paying the tax is responsible for removing them.
Maine (ME)Neither the BMV fuel tax page, Form MV-207 nor the miscellaneous fee table in 29-250 C.M.R. ch. 165 lists a license fee; the only licensing charge is the $5 decal fee. $5.00 per set of two decals, one set per qualified vehicle (BMV page and Form MV-207); ch. 165 lists the fuel decal fee as $5.00 per vehicle. Replacement decals cost the full fee unless the licensee certifies they never arrived or were defective.

Massachusetts (MA)No separate license fee is published; Form IFTA-1 charges only the $8 per vehicle decal fee under the heading Decal order and application fee. $8 per qualified vehicle (one set of two decals): the IFTA Manual states decals cost $8 per set and Form IFTA-1 multiplies the number of IFTA vehicles by $8. Decals are not vehicle specific and extra decals can be ordered.
Michigan (MI)Michigan charges nothing for the IFTA license or the decals. The obligation the fee-free license carries is the quarterly return, which must be filed even for a quarter with no activity. Treasury states plainly on both the IFTA landing page and the Apply for IFTA License page that there is no fee for a Michigan IFTA license and decals. This is a published zero, not an unconfirmed blank. Included in the same published statement: no fee for a Michigan IFTA license and decals. Additional and replacement decals are ordered through the IPC account.
Minnesota (MN)A revoked, suspended, or cancelled license is reinstated for $100 once the cause is cured (Minn. Stat. 168D.06). A bond may also be required on reinstatement, based on industry averages for annual fuel tax liability and up to $25,000 per year per vehicle. The $28 license fee is two statutory charges billed as one line. Minn. Stat. 168D.06 (Fuel license fees, last amended 2023 c 68 art 7 s 12, no 2026 amendment) sets an annual fuel license fee of $15 and an annual application filing fee of $13 for quarterly reporting of fuel tax; $15 plus $13 is the $28 the DVS IFTA manual (April 2025) and MnDOT's 2026 Resource Book list as the license fee. The separate $12 filing fee is the general vehicle transaction filing fee in Minn. Stat. 168.33, subdivision 7, paragraph (a), clause (2), which names motor carrier fuel licenses under sections 168D.05 and 168D.06. Paragraph (f) of that subdivision adds a $1 surcharge when a deputy registrar processes the transaction. A carrier therefore pays $40 a year per account ($41 at a deputy registrar), plus $2.50 per vehicle for decals. $2.50 per vehicle for a set of two decals, set by Minn. Stat. 168D.07 by reference to the International Fuel Tax Agreement line of the section 168.12, subdivision 5 fee table. Decals are not transferable and unused decals are not refunded or exchanged.

Mississippi (MS)No Department of Revenue page read for this research states an IFTA license fee. The IFTA, Inc. license fee survey lists no Mississippi charge for the fuel license, the application, replacement or renewal, but that survey reports 2011 figures, so it is not recorded as the current fee. Decals are provided at no cost. On the annual renewal return the carrier enters the number of company-owned trucks that need a decal and, separately, the number of operated or leased trucks that are not company owned. Temporary IFTA decals are requested on TAP.
Missouri (MO)No license or decal fee. Late returns draw a penalty of $50 or 10 percent of the net tax due, whichever is greater. Missouri does not charge for an IFTA license or decals. Request only as many decals as you need; the count must reconcile with your licensed trucks. No charge. Additional decals are ordered in MoDOT Carrier Express.

Oklahoma (OK)Beyond the $2.00 decal set there are two Oklahoma IFTA charges. A revoked licence costs $100 to reinstate. Utah (UT)The published IFTA charges are the $4.00 per set decal fee on renewal (TC-937) and the $100 reinstatement fee after revocation for noncompliance (Tax Commission IFTA page). The intrastate-side Special Fuel User trip permit is $25 under Utah Code 59-13-303(2)(c). No IFTA license fee is published: the Tax Commission's IFTA & Special Fuel User page opens the account through TC-69 online registration or TAP and names no license charge, and the TC-937 renewal bill prices only decals. Rather than guess a zero or an amount, no license fee is recorded. Form TC-937 (Rev. 4/24) prices a decal set at $4.00, total due being the number of sets multiplied by $4.00; a set is two decals displayed one on each side of the vehicle cab. Special Fuel User decals for intrastate-only carriers are free (Form TC-938).

Vermont (VT)The DMV guide answers 'What is the cost for an IFTA permit?' with 'There is no fee for an IFTA permit.' No decal charge appears on the DMV IFTA page, Form CVO-112, the IRP/IFTA manual or the Commercial Trucking Fees page, and the guide's no-fee answer covers the IFTA permit without naming decals separately, so no decal amount is recorded.

Washington (WA)Licence free, decals $10 per set of two per qualified vehicle per year. Reinstating a revoked or cancelled licence costs $100 for each licence reissued, on top of filing every outstanding return and clearing any balance on the IFTA or IRP account. The Department of Licensing fee table states the Washington IFTA licence carries no fee and is issued with each paid set of decals. This is a published zero, not an unconfirmed figure. $10 per set of two decals, one set for each qualified motor vehicle, applied for every year. One decal goes on each side of the vehicle.

Wyoming (WY)Total due on the application is 10 dollars plus 4 dollars times the number of decal pairs, payable to WyDOT. Form CC-105 (Rev 2026-01) sets the IFTA license fee at 10 dollars, charged for new and renewal licenses and for a duplicate license or a name change. W.S. 39-17-206(d) has applicants pay the license and decal fees the department prescribes. Form CC-105 (Rev 2026-01) charges 4.00 dollars per pair of decals, one pair per vehicle. The 2022 IFTA Manual still states 3.00 dollars per set; the current application form governs. The quarterly return is where the real money moves: miles and gallons by jurisdiction, taxed at each jurisdiction’s own rate. The IFTA fuel tax rates by state table holds the current quarter’s rates, and the IFTA calculator turns a quarter of trip sheets into the amount owed or recovered. A carrier that also runs apportioned plates keeps the two accounts separate: the IRP registration record prices registration by fleet miles, a different bill from this license.
