Form 2290 e-file providers
E-filing Form 2290 happens through an IRS-authorized commercial provider, not on IRS.gov itself. The IRS approves the software, does not rank or endorse any vendor, and returns the watermarked Schedule 1 electronically once it accepts the return. This page carries the complete provider snapshot for the current tax year plus the rules that decide whether you must e-file.

What IRS authorization actually means
The listed companies have passed the IRS Assurance Testing System (ATS) requirements for software developers of electronic Form 2290 excise tax returns for tax year 2026. Passing means the software can provide correct data in the proper format for IRS processing; it does not mean a package includes every schedule or will meet the needs of all filers. It is the filer's responsibility to contact the provider to determine if the software meets their needs.
Read that narrowly, because it is narrow: authorization means the software passed the IRS's format and data testing. It is not a quality ranking, a price endorsement, or a service guarantee. The tax itself, its rates, and its deadlines are covered in Form 2290 rates and deadlines.
The e-file rules
- Who must e-file: Electronic filing is required for each return reporting and paying tax on 25 or more vehicles filed during the tax period (tax-suspended vehicles do not count toward the 25). The IRS encourages e-filing for all returns.
- When it is due: Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use. For vehicles first used in July 2026, the return and payment are due by August 31, 2026.
- What comes back: When Form 2290 is e-filed, the watermarked Schedule 1 comes back from the e-file provider electronically after the IRS accepts the return, almost immediately after acceptance. That stamped Schedule 1 is the proof of payment states require for IRP plates and registration.
- What you need first: Filing requires an employer identification number; a Social Security number cannot be used. The IRS advises allowing four weeks for a new EIN to be established in its systems before filing Form 2290.
The Schedule 1 is usually the urgent part: states require it to issue or renew apportioned plates, so a registration appointment is often what forces the filing. See IRP registration by state for where it gets presented, and your first 30 days with new authority for where the filing sits in a new carrier's sequence.
The tax year 2026 provider snapshot
All 126 providers on the IRS list for tax year 2026, alphabetically; the IRS presents the list in no ranked order and neither do we. This snapshot reflects the list as of the accessed date on the source; the IRS adds and removes providers, so confirm on the IRS provider list before you commit.
Fees, and how to choose
The IRS states that services offered and fees charged differ by provider, and publishes no fee schedule for any of them, so no provider price is recorded here. The tax itself is paid to the IRS; the provider's service fee is a separate vendor charge.
With pricing unpublished at the list level, compare on criteria instead: the provider's posted fee for your vehicle count, whether corrections and VIN fixes are included or extra, how the Schedule 1 is delivered, and whether the provider supports amended returns and credits. Any provider on the IRS list can transmit the same return; the tax comes out identical, so the service fee and the workflow are the whole comparison.
