Florida keeps IFTA inside FLHSMV's Bureau of Commercial Vehicle and Driver Services, pairs the IFTA account to your FEIN, and files quarters through its Interstate Carrier Filing System. The sourced facts live on the Florida IFTA page; this walkthrough puts them in filing order.

Step 1: confirm Florida is your base

A Florida IFTA license fits a carrier whose qualified vehicles are based in Florida and cross into other IFTA jurisdictions. Out-of-state trips too rare to justify a license can run on other states' permits, and inbound carriers without IFTA buy Florida's own temporary fuel use permit, covered on the trip and fuel permits page.

Step 2: apply with HSMV 85008

The application is form HSMV 85008, a two-page form that includes the decal order. File it by mail to the bureau, at the Tallahassee walk-in office for originals and first-time renewals, or electronically. Florida issues the license at no charge and uses your FEIN as the account number; IFTA and IRP must match on business name and FEIN, which trips up carriers who formed a new entity between registrations.

Step 3: request E-File access early

Quarterly returns and decal orders file through the Interstate Carrier Filing System (ICFS), and E-File access requires its own request form (HSMV 85083). Sort the access out before your first quarter closes so the deadline is a filing exercise, not an enrollment exercise.

Step 4: file the quarter in ICFS

Build the return from miles and gallons per jurisdiction and file it in ICFS by the quarterly deadline; Florida's deadline table renders with sources on the Florida IFTA page, and a return is due even for a quarter with no travel. The return applies each jurisdiction's current rate; Florida's diesel line this quarter is $0.4097 per gallon in the national matrix. Check your math with the IFTA calculator and scan other jurisdictions on the IFTA rates by state table.

Step 5: renew and re-decal on the calendar year

Renew through the same bureau, order the new decal sets with the renewal, and carry the license copy in each cab. The national how to file IFTA guide covers the record set auditors expect behind every filed quarter.
