The Connecticut intrastate rule
Federal USDOT registration depends on the vehicle and operation. The rows below show what Connecticut requires for carriers operating inside the state. Our state DOT number requirements table holds the same answer for every state. A field reading "Not confirmed" means this guide has no verified figure for that field.
The Connecticut line is 18,001 pounds of gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight, whichever applies, for a vehicle engaged in intrastate commerce. That sits above the federal 10,001-pound line for interstate carriers and below the 26,001-pound CDL line. The intrastate number is also required, at any weight, for a vehicle hauling hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards and for a vehicle designed or used to carry more than eight passengers including the driver for compensation, or more than fifteen including the driver not for compensation. C.G.S. 14-163c(a)(1) uses the same 18,001-pound line to apply the federal safety rules to intrastate vehicles.
Connecticut requires a USDOT number for purely intrastate operation of a covered vehicle. The DMV states that interstate and intrastate carriers alike are subject to the federal motor carrier safety and hazardous materials rules the state adopts under C.G.S. 14-163c. A company whose interstate authority FMCSA has revoked cannot become a Connecticut intrastate carrier until FMCSA lifts the revoked status. The number must be updated every 24 months, or at once after any change, and proof of insurance goes to the DMV Insurance Compliance Unit once a year.
No separate Connecticut carrier number
Connecticut issues no state carrier number to freight carriers; the intrastate identifier is the USDOT number from FMCSA. The only Connecticut-issued carrier credential is the CTDOT certificate of public convenience and necessity for household goods movers, whose number C.G.S. 13b-396a requires in every printed advertisement alongside any federal permit or registration number. The CTDOT pages read do not say whether a USDOT number must exist before the certificate issues, so no prerequisite is asserted; a mover's trucks of 18,001 pounds or more need the USDOT number either way.
Where a Connecticut carrier enrolls
Registration goes to the agency that issues each credential; the federal process is covered step by step in our guide to getting a USDOT number. Filing services resell these same applications, so the rows below name the direct channel first.
Create a user profile, complete identity verification, and create a company account in Motus to apply for a USDOT number and the registrations your operation needs. Claim your existing USDOT record in Motus using the company official’s Login.gov email, then manage registrations or apply for additional authority. See the Motus account guide before opening or claiming your record.
- USDOT number
- Directly with FMCSA, online. The Connecticut DMV sends intrastate and interstate carriers alike to FMCSA to apply for the number and to the FMCSA identification report site to update it. (registration site)
The Connecticut DMV takes no USDOT application of its own. What it does collect is the annual proof of insurance for intrastate carriers with vehicles of 18,001 pounds or more, sent to DMV.CommercialAudit@ct.gov or the DMV Compliance Unit in Wethersfield. The only state authority application is CTDOT's household goods certificate, covered on our Connecticut intrastate authority page.
To reactivate a Connecticut intrastate-only DOT number, the DMV says to call 860-263-5163; an interstate number is reactivated on the federal website, with questions to FMCSA at 1-800-832-5660. The DMV says to allow 7 to 10 days for reactivation. Every interstate carrier also faces the FMCSA New Entrant safety audit.
Once a number is active, anyone can pull the public record behind it; our DOT number lookup guide shows how to read that snapshot the way brokers and enforcement do, and the MC number lookup reads the live record back for a number you type in.
The same number carries your safety history. Every roadside inspection written against it feeds the CSA percentiles a broker's vetting platform reads after it checks your authority and insurance, and a violation recorded in error is corrected through DataQs, not by the state agency that issued the credential above.
The state registration triggers behind it
These are the operations that pull a carrier into Connecticut's own motor carrier registration, where the DOT number rules above attach. The full credential, fees, and insurance filings live on the Connecticut intrastate authority page.
Where the number fits in the Connecticut launch
Registration numbers come early: they exist before insurance binds and before the first load. For the full order of operations, from entity to authority to plates, work through start a trucking company in Connecticut, and keep the Connecticut trucking hub handy for the rest of the state's credentials.
