The Georgia intrastate rule
FMCSA requires a USDOT number for interstate operations everywhere; the rows below show what Georgia adds for carriers that never leave the state. Our state DOT number requirements table holds the same answer for every state. A field reading "Not confirmed" means the agency publishes no figure.

- Fact Sheet #29 cites DPS Rules 1-390.19 and 1-390.21 for the marking requirement, and the GIMC application ties intrastate registration to O.C.G.A. 40-2-140. Neither the rule text under that older DPS numbering nor the current O.C.G.A. section catchline could be read at an official Georgia source during this pass, because the code is published through a JavaScript-driven LexisNexis portal linked from legis.ga.gov and aggregator copies are out of scope. Those references are recorded as agency-cited in the notes above rather than asserted here as verified citations.
The Department of Public Safety applies the rule to an intrastate motor carrier that has a gross vehicle weight rating in excess of 10,000 pounds, or operates a vehicle designed to carry more than 8 passengers including the driver for compensation, or more than 15 passengers including the driver when not for compensation, or transports placardable amounts of hazardous materials, and that operates only within the State of Georgia.
Georgia has run an intrastate USDOT numbering program since October 1, 1998. Every vehicle operated by a motor carrier working exclusively inside Georgia displays its motor carrier identification number preceded by USDOT and followed by GA, plus the legal name or a single trade name, on each side of the power unit, readily legible from 50 feet in daylight and in a sharply contrasting color. Fact Sheet #29 attributes the marking rule to DPS Rules 1-390.19 and 1-390.21.
The Intrastate USDOT number displayed with a GA suffix
The federal number is not the whole story in Georgia: the state issues its own carrier credential, and the two are tied together during the state application covered on the Georgia intrastate authority page.
Georgia issues no separate state carrier number in the shape of a California CA number or a TxDMV Number. The state credential is the federal number itself, obtained as an intrastate carrier and marked with the GA suffix. The Georgia Trucking Portal FAQ uses the informal label GADOT number for the same thing and routes applicants to FMCSA to get it. The annual Georgia Intrastate Motor Carrier registration is the paperwork that sits on top of the number, and its application asks for the USDOT number.
Where a Georgia carrier enrolls

- Directly with FMCSA. An intrastate-only Georgia carrier applies through FMCSA and selects the intrastate option; a carrier that runs interstate, or interstate and intrastate, applies for a standard USDOT number the same way. (registration site)
A carrier that runs only inside Georgia registers under GIMC. A carrier that crosses a state line registers under UCR instead; the two are mutually exclusive. GIMC runs on the calendar year with a December 31 deadline and enforcement from January 1, and the per-vehicle fee schedule is recorded in the state intrastate authority page rather than repeated here.
No Georgia agency issues the number. Fact Sheet #29 sends carriers whose operations are interstate only, or interstate and intrastate, to the United States Department of Transportation at 800-832-5660 or to the FMCSA website.
