IFTA in New Hampshire is run by the Department of Safety. Since April 21, 2025 the IFTA team sits with the IRP team in a single Motor Carrier Services office at the DMV building, 23 Hazen Drive, Concord. Decals cost $10 a set per qualified vehicle, there is no separate license fee, and the application must be filed under an Employer Identification Number, not a Social Security number. Returns are quarterly through the Motor Carrier Connect portal, due the last day of the month after each quarter.

More New Hampshire IFTA rules
- Filing portal: account setup
- Request internet access to an existing account through the link on the sign-in page; the system lets carriers register for IFTA, order the license and decals, renew, file returns, pay and message the office.
- Filing portal: due dates
- Last day of the month following the end of each quarter (IFTA Articles of Agreement R960).
- Filing portal: detail
- New Hampshire's own interest rate was not found on the pages read; IFTA R1230 sets interest on delinquent taxes across jurisdictions.
- Credentials: license
- The license runs for the calendar year ending December 31, and the license or a copy must be carried in each qualified vehicle before it operates in any other jurisdiction.
- Credentials: decals
- Two decals per qualified vehicle, applied to the exterior of both sides of the cab.
- Trip permit: note
- No New Hampshire fuel trip permit fee or procedure appears on the DMV IFTA page, Form RT 129, Saf-C 303 or the Motor Carrier Connect sign-in page. Fees quoted for a New Hampshire fuel permit appear only on permit-vendor sites, which are not sources here.
- Bond requirement: detail
- Saf-C 303.04 requires a surety bond equal to the licensee's quarterly IFTA tax liability when a licensee fails to pay taxes; cash or a bank letter of credit may substitute, and the requirement is released after 4 consecutive quarters with all taxes paid.

Who licenses in New Hampshire
Any carrier based in an IFTA jurisdiction that runs a qualified motor vehicle in two or more member jurisdictions must hold an IFTA license. A qualified vehicle has two axles over the IFTA weight line, three or more axles at any weight, or runs in a combination over that line. To make New Hampshire your base, you need a physical New Hampshire business location you can prove with a utility bill, tax bill or lease.
Applying and getting decals
Apply online through New Hampshire Motor Carrier Connect, or on Form RT 129 with the vehicle inventory sheet and contact form. The application needs a USDOT number for interstate operations, good standing with the Secretary of State, current UCR, an EIN, proof of the New Hampshire location, and an IRP registration or vehicle list.
The only charge is the decal set per qualified vehicle, one decal for each side of the cab. Pay IFTA by its own check; it cannot be combined with any other payment. Carry the license or a copy in each vehicle.
Quarterly filing and penalties
Returns are due on the last day of the month after each quarter closes, with weekend and holiday dates moving to the next business day. File and pay through Motor Carrier Connect. A late or missing return draws the IFTA penalty, the greater of a flat amount or a share of the tax owed, plus interest set under the agreement.
A licensee who fails to pay can be required to post a surety bond equal to a quarter's tax, released after a run of quarters paid in full.
Renewal
Licenses run for the calendar year and expire December 31. Renew through Motor Carrier Connect or on Form RT 129 marked Renewal.
The tax rates live in the quarterly matrix
IFTA rates change every quarter, so we keep them in one refreshed store instead of copying them onto every state page. The current quarter is 4Q 2026, effective Oct 1, 2026 through Dec 31, 2026, provisional until Dec 4, 2026. Use the IFTA rates by state table for the full matrix, or the IFTA calculator to run your miles and gallons against the current rates.

What pairs with IFTA
IFTA and IRP travel together: the same interstate operation that needs a fuel tax license usually needs apportioned plates through New Hampshire IRP. If you are still setting up, the full order of operations is in start a trucking company in New Hampshire.
