Nevada IRP administration
- Office
- DMV Motor Carrier Division, 555 Wright Way, Carson City, NV 89711-0600; Motor Carrier branch offices in Carson City, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Reno and Elko
- Process
- Apply to the DMV Motor Carrier Division for apportioned registration; apportion fees by fleet miles in each jurisdiction; receive plates and a cab card for each fleet vehicle. Application packets differ for carriers using existing mileage from another state and carriers with no previous mileage history, and form MC 090 lists the required forms. Renewals run through the Nevada Commercial Online Registration System (NCORS).
- Fee structure
- Apportioned fee = total fleet miles x jurisdiction weight / total miles, per the IRP formula; registration fees are paid to the various jurisdictions in which fleet vehicles are operated.
To work through your mileage inputs, calculate each jurisdiction’s share of your fleet miles. The estimator apportions any full-year fees you enter; it does not contain state fee schedules or issue an official quote.
More Nevada IRP rules
Base jurisdiction, renewal, and audit in detail
The rules that decide whether Nevada can be your base jurisdiction, what qualifies, and what happens at renewal and audit. Each one is sourced.
- Base jurisdiction rules: Summary
- Nevada as base jurisdiction for apportioned registration: the established place of business and operational control tests in MC 050 govern who may base in the state.
- Qualifying vehicles
- MC 050 apportionable vehicle: a vehicle used for hire or designed, used or maintained primarily for transporting property that (a) has two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,000 pounds, or (b) has three or more axles regardless of weight, or (c) is used in combination when the gross vehicle weight of the combination exceeds 26,000 pounds. Recreational vehicles, vehicles displaying restricted plates, buses used in the transportation of chartered parties and government vehicles are excluded.
- Renewal: Summary
- Annual renewal on the Nevada schedule with prior-year miles reported and coming-year apportionment paid, processed online through NCORS. Temporary Vehicle Registrations are available if the plate, sticker and cab card cannot be issued; temporaries are valid for 30 days, are not issued for vehicles being renewed, and the Motor Carrier Division will not issue extensions.
Which vehicles apportion
MC 050 draws the apportionable class the IRP uses: power units used for hire or primarily for property transport, qualifying by axle count or combination weight. Recreational vehicles, restricted-plate vehicles, chartered-party buses and government vehicles sit outside it. The qualifying-vehicles block on this page carries the full definition from the manual.
Applying and renewing
Application packets differ depending on whether you bring mileage history from another state, and form MC 090 lists the required documents. Renewals run online through the state's commercial registration system, with prior-year miles reported and the coming year's apportionment paid. If credentials cannot reach you in time, the division can issue temporary registrations good for a fixed short window, with no extensions.
Fees and credentials
Apportioned fees follow the IRP formula: fleet miles in each jurisdiction against total miles, by weight. Despite fees paid across jurisdictions, each fleet vehicle ends up with a single plate and a single cab card covering the member jurisdictions, and Nevada's participation rests on a specific section of Chapter 706 that the manual cites.
What pairs with IRP
The same interstate operation that needs apportioned plates almost always needs an IFTA license through Nevada, and heavy power units owe the federal Form 2290 heavy vehicle use tax before plates renew. To compare how other states run IRP, see the national IRP registration table.
