The Wyoming intrastate rule
Federal USDOT registration depends on the vehicle and operation. The rows below show what Wyoming requires for carriers operating inside the state. Our state DOT number requirements table holds the same answer for every state. A field reading "Not confirmed" means this guide has no verified figure for that field.
The line is over 26,000 pounds, and it works differently for the two Wyoming carrier types. A private carrier (a business hauling its own property or employees in a vehicle over 26,000 pounds GVW, W.S. 31-18-101(a)(x)(D)) must supply a USDOT number with its operating authority application. A contract (for-hire) carrier must have one when the GVW is more than 26,000 pounds or the vehicle is a passenger vehicle above the small-taxi size. The 2020 manual says taxis hauling 7 plus the driver do not need one; the 2026 MC-100 says more than 9 passengers including the driver must have one. Both statements are recorded because the two current WYDOT documents word the passenger line differently.
Wyoming requires the USDOT number from intrastate carriers through its operating authority program, not only from interstate carriers. A contract carrier of property at or under 26,000 pounds GVW is not required to have one under the Operating Authority Manual, though it still needs Wyoming contract authority at any weight.
The WYDOT docket number
The federal number is not the whole story in Wyoming: the state issues its own carrier credential, and the two are tied together during the state application covered on the Wyoming intrastate authority page.
- Issued by
- Wyoming Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Services, Regulatory (Operating Authority) Section
- Display rule
- Wyoming amends 49 CFR 390.21(b)(2) for intrastate carriers: the vehicle shows the USDOT number preceded by USDOT and followed by the suffix WY, as in USDOT 123456 WY. W.S. 31-18-304 separately requires the motor carrier's name or trade name on every commercial vehicle, legible from 50 feet in daylight when the vehicle is stopped; a separate display on semitrailers and trailers is not needed when the power unit carries it.
W.S. 31-18-209(e) directs WYDOT to assign each motor carrier a docket number as it grants authority, and the MC-100 carries a Docket Number box for department use only. Whether a USDOT number must come first depends on the carrier: private carriers and contract carriers over 26,000 pounds or hauling passengers above the taxi line must list one on the application, while a light contract property carrier is not required to have one, so no single yes or no answer fits. No rule found requires the docket number to be displayed on the vehicle.
Where a Wyoming carrier enrolls
Registration goes to the agency that issues each credential; the federal process is covered step by step in our guide to getting a USDOT number. Filing services resell these same applications, so the rows below name the direct channel first.
Create a user profile, complete identity verification, and create a company account in Motus to apply for a USDOT number and the registrations your operation needs. Claim your existing USDOT record in Motus using the company official’s Login.gov email, then manage registrations or apply for additional authority. See the Motus account guide before opening or claiming your record.
- USDOT number
- Directly with FMCSA. No Wyoming agency issues the USDOT number: WYDOT asks for the number on the MC-100 authority application and on the IFTA and IRP account checklists, and verifies it on SAFER. (registration site)
- USDOT application fee
- The Wyoming agency pages do not price the federal registration. The Wyoming fee that goes with this step is the one-time operating authority filing fee, shown on the intrastate authority page.
The state-side step that pairs with the USDOT number is the Wyoming Letter of Authority. The MC-100 asks for the USDOT number and requires the listed commodities to match the carrier's SAFER record, and the docket number is assigned when authority is granted.
The WYDOT Apportioned Plates Manual adds that first-time USDOT applicants are enrolled in the FMCSA New Entrant Safety Assurance Program and that Motor Vehicle Services must be told immediately if the USDOT number changes.
Once a number is active, anyone can pull the public record behind it; our DOT number lookup guide shows how to read that snapshot the way brokers and enforcement do, and the MC number lookup reads the live record back for a number you type in.
The same number carries your safety history. Every roadside inspection written against it feeds the CSA percentiles a broker's vetting platform reads after it checks your authority and insurance, and a violation recorded in error is corrected through DataQs, not by the state agency that issued the credential above.
The state registration triggers behind it
These are the operations that pull a carrier into Wyoming's own motor carrier registration, where the DOT number rules above attach. The full credential, fees, and insurance filings live on the Wyoming intrastate authority page.
Where the number fits in the Wyoming launch
Registration numbers come early: they exist before insurance binds and before the first load. For the full order of operations, from entity to authority to plates, work through start a trucking company in Wyoming, and keep the Wyoming trucking hub handy for the rest of the state's credentials.
